Interesting idea you have there! Now if we were talking about a home desktop I would say it was well worth exploring your upgrade options. Desktop PC’s are pretty much a standard style, so the hardware within is made to a standard size and is designed in a way that your can swap parts out easily. So, it would be fairly easy to put more memory in and a bigger hard drive.

This is not always the case with laptops. Whilst most will allow you to upgrade the memory there will be a maximum size that you can go, which can be quite low. You might have 2 slots but both can be already in use, so you might have to through away your memory to find some more.

Things get more complicated with hard drives, you’ll have to make sure you get the right type for your model.

Over and above this your upgrade choices are very slim. Graphic cards and even processors are often embedded onto the motherboard, now of which you can get your hands on and change as they are often custom made to find the exact size of the unit.

So what about buying a refurbished laptop? If you pick a nearly new one then savings can still be had and you’ll benefit from newer technology than simply throwing money at your old one. It might also be worth looking at new deals as often these can be very competitive.

There are lots of different places to hunt down a refurbished laptop online, including this site! We will be adding some great links and resources for finding what you need right here soon, but for now hopefully this article will help you.

Online Auctions like Ebay

You can search Ebay for a refurbished laptop and you’ll often find a good selection on there. Be careful though and make sure you read all the information very carefully before you bid. It’s easy to get carried away on Ebay and you might spot an excellent item for a great price that is about to close, quickly placing a bid and winning the item. However what you didn’t read was somewhere down the page the seller stating that the laptop was faulty in one way or another. You must always read the whole page on Ebay, don’t rely on the Title to tell you.

Online Classified Pages like Gumtree

Again a good site for a selection of laptops but often these will be used rather than refurbished. The difference being that someone is simply selling you there old laptop rather than a refurbished one that has been fully repaired prior to selling

Big Online companies like Amazon

This is a great place to find a refurbished laptop. On Amazon, like Ebay, anyone can list their own products for sale. So track down a laptop on Ebay you would like (e.g. a brand new one) and then check the links to “New and used for $x” on the site. You will often find listings here from people selling refurbished hardware and as its sold through Amazon you get a lot more protection that simply buying from someone you don’t know.

Small online companies like your local computer store

Do a search on google for “refurbished laptop Manhattan” if you live in Manhatten, otherwise replace with your town or city. Often this will take show you shops in your area that will sell them, however don’t expect them to be quite as cheap as some of the deals on the net. The advantage is though you will be able to pick it up rather than waiting for delivery and also, you have someone to take it back to if you have any issues.

As you can see, there are lots of options, you just need to get your investigation head on and start looking. Don’t forget to compare any deals against what you could buy new.

When would a refurbished laptop be more appropriate that just going out to treat yourself to a brand new one? It’s a good question when you often can see lots of excellent deals from the hardware manufactures like Dell and HP. However there are hidden advantages to getting a refurbished laptop over a brand new one.

It’s often the case that refurbished laptops are nearly new laptops that have been returned to the manufacturer with a minor faulty; sometimes this can be a physical failure or cosmetic damage, for example a scratch on the outer casing. In the case of a physical failure the supplier will replace the broken item and the sell it on to a broker who will sell it directly to you. If it has a cosmetic scratch that doesn’t effect the actual performance of the laptop they probably will sell it on as it is.

Now, ask yourself this question, are you someone who wants your equipment to be pristine? Do you leave the protective packaging on your remote controls? If so, you probably won’t love the idea of getting a laptop with a scratch on it.

However if you are relaxed about this type of thing and realize the benefits of saving $100+ off something that would probably have scratched yourself within a few weeks then you are the ideal candidate for purchasing an refurbished laptop.

There are some great bargains to be had regardless of buying new or used so work out your budget and see what you can afford. Happy Hunting!

People often look to me as their personal technology guide, I’m the friend they go to when they are considering an IT purchase, looking to upgrade their mobile or most often, looking to buy a replacement PC or Laptop.

A question I often get asked is “Should I buy a Refurbished Laptop?”, normally followed by a statement about having spotted a cheap one on Ebay. There are pros and cons to purchasing one but as I often say, I can’t make the decision for them, they need to consider the following:

Do they want bang up to date technology, high spec graphics, etc? If so, they are probably better of buying a brand new one.

Are you using it simply for surfing the net, sending emails, writing documents? A refurbished laptop should do all of these fine

Are they looking for a long or extended warranty? If so, buy a new one

Are they willing to take a chance on a slighty older laptop with a shorter warranty, to get the bargain price they are after? Is so, refurb

Is image important? Do they want the latest Apple Macbook Pro? Or would they tolerate an older, maybe less known brand?

These are all the sort of logical questions you should be asking yourself if you are looking for a replacement laptop. You can get a bargain if you go for a refurbed one, but make sure you check out the specs and are confident that you really are getting the best deal. If so, go ahead and get yourself one. The worst case scenario, you can always sell it on Ebay once you are finished with it.

If you have been looking to replace your laptop, or maybe you are looking to buy your first notebook pc, you might have come across the term Refurbished Laptop. This can have several meanings and you should read this article before you make any decisions on purchasing one.

The most simple explanation to describe a Refurbished Laptop is one that is usually secondhand and has possibly broken before being repaired and offered for resale. Now that might sound alarming, to think that it was broken, however it is often the case that something very minor stopped working and the user didn’t know how to fix it so sold it as faulty, possibly on Ebay where someone who knows about fixing computer hardware has purchased cheapily and fixed it up, so really it shouldn’t be a problem.

The alternative, and somewhat preferrable option, is where a laptop has been sold by a shop or directly from the supplier online and for whatever reason, maybe the box was damaged or there was a small scratch on the lid, the buyer has returned it for a full refend. The shop or supplier should not now sell that piece of hardware as new, because strictly speaking it isn’t. Now we cannot see inside every shop and factory but my guess is these returns are often sold as new, however the reputable companies will sell this on, often branding it as B-Grade stock, which simply means its been returned for re-supply.

The main point to consider and this is the most important is how much would it cost you to buy it new. If there is a cost saving to be had then go for it but remember to check on what warranty you get with the refurbed kit. Also, if its an older notebook check that the specification is still good, is the hard drive big enough, does it have much memory, what software is supplied.

Buying a refurbished laptop can be an excellent way to get a bargain piece of technology but make sure you know what you are getting and always consider what you could get brand new, as the market is so competitive you can often find a great deal one a new one.
